Adherence to the perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis protocol in elective surgeries at Maca’s General Hospital, Ecuador

Objective: to evaluate nursing staff adherence to the antibiotic prophylaxis protocol in elective surgeries at Macas General Hospital between January and July 2023. Method: A quantitative, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted, which included a survey of 25 nursing professionals and a review of 30 medical records using an observation form. Results: Deficiencies were identified in knowledge about treatment duration and antibiotic selection factors; in addition, 70% of cases did not receive the antibiotic before the surgical incision, and in 80% of cases, the timing of administration was inadequate. Conclusion: It was concluded that there were gaps in knowledge and failures in the application of the protocol that negatively influenced adherence, highlighting the need to strengthen training and institutional control.
